As I watch both of my boys go up the stairs I’m in awe that my little boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder who could not empathize a year ago is now honing into how I feel by my body language and tone. It’s also a moment to check in with myself because obviously my behavior indicates I’m stressed.
“ Mommy I want to me Boruto this Halloween, Naruto on the 2nd Halloween, Deadpool on the 3rd one, My Hero Academia for the 4th one and ….for the fifth one I’m going to be a Ninja. Ok?” After I tell him ok he runs back up the stairs.

I’m so happy! Because he has stopped saying “ I can’t read! I can’t spell!” Instead he’s confident in his skills and asks for support.
Then I get the Back-to-School Night reminders and I’m thinking “ I hate Back to School Night.” I know this is a surprise since I’m 110% about my kids. However, as a single mom with 2 kids who go to school in Virginia and Maryland while we live in DC means that I have a crazy commute during rush hour.
